To declare-Unakoti-as-national-heritage

Agartala, Nov 6 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has demanded the Centre to declare Unakoti, an 8th century archaeological site in North Tripura district, as a national heritage, officials said here today.

According to Tripura Tourism Development Corporation officials, Governor Kamala, during her recent visit to the site had expressed her displeasure over its poor maintenance, which prompted Sarkar to write to the Centre on Tuesday to declare the site as a national heritage.

Unakoti has images of Lord Shiva, Ram and Ganapati among others deities of Hindu pantheon carved in rocks.

The Centre has recently granted Rs 12 crore to the state for developing the area, 178 km from here, as a major tourist destination.
