Literacy rate in India is 65.38 per cent

New Delhi, August 24: The overall literacy rate in the country is 65.38 per cent as per the provisional report of the census 2001, Minister of State for Science and Technology Bachi Singh Rawat informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply on Friday.

In reply to another question, the Minister told Ravi Shankar Prasad that the percentage of girl students in higher education has risen from 11 per cent in 1950/51 to 35 per cent in 1999/2000.

He told Ram Jethmalani that his Ministry does not have any scheme for providing computer education in public sector.

Rawat told N.K. Premachandran that the government has decided in principle to upgrade facilities and infrastructure in all Regional Engineering Colleges.
